Question: Goldfish Acting Strangely?
One of my larger goldfish has been 'resting' on the stone slab just under the surface of the pond for the past few days. It seems OK and can swim off when it wants to. I have noticed today that one of it's eyes seems to be swollen outwards so it looks as if it has a bubble on that side of its head. It does not seem particularly distressed and the other goldfish are all perfectly well and happy about 18" to 2' down. The pond is about 3'6" deep and 8' dia with two air stones in it. Has anybody got any ideas about this fish?
Answer: You have two problems, swim bladder disease, and the eye problem caused by a weakend fish due to poor water quality.
Swimbladder is a disease which symptoms cause fish to become unable to swim correctly, your fish may exibit swimming toward the bottom of your tank or bowl, then floating back up, swimming in circles or laying or floating on his side....
There are three main things according to the posts and articles I've read that can lead to swimbladder disease.
Constipation due to overfeeding
Bad water quality
Bacteria
I recommend the following regimine, recommened to me over two years ago.
First, as soon as you notice signs of swimbladder do a 35% water change, taking care not to stress the fish by having the water temp as close to his tank (pond) as possible. After your water change you should not feed your fish any food for two days. On the third day feed your fish a fresh pea. Frozen peas thawed, popped out of the skin, and cut into bite size pieces. And then do another water change.
If you don't use aquarium salt this is a good addition to most tanks (pond). The recommended dose is one teaspoon per gallon, or one tablespoon per five gallons. If you have never added salt and you are unsure; you may want to first acclimate him at only 1/2 tsp per gallon. The salt will help you fish heal from the eye problem. And the break in feeding and two water changes will improve the water quality.

Question: Would this be a decent first time bass combo?
I will just be fishing small drop-shot worms, wacky rigged senkos, you know finesse soft plastics. Maybe even lizards. I am not going to be a full blown bass angler, just a monthly thing. I was thinking would the 6' medium action rod with that will hold 115 yds. of 6 lb. line be enough? The heaviest lure i will throw will be 1/4 oz. I will use 6-8 lb. monofilament.
Would it do me for just monthly bass fishing?
Answer: It will work but you got better choices within that price range.
Currently, there are several nice combos that will do a better job than the combo you picked. The combo impressed me the most is Daiwa D-Shock. It got a fairly smooth front drag spinning reel and a graphite rod and it is very reasonably priced. Unfortunately, there is a catch. I do not recommend that you purchase those combos online because you absolutely need to see those rods in person.
The markings on those rods are VERY MESSED UP. There are at least 3 (maybe even 4) variations of rods out there! One will be a fiberglass rod. The other two are graphite or graphite composite rods; one will feel more like a medium-light and one will feel feel closer to a medium-heavy fiberglass rod. They will look exactly the same and they will have the exact same markings on them even though they are actually quite different. There's absolutely no way you could find out about this unless you held those rods in your hands! You could find out if the rod was made out of graphite (or graphite composite) rather easily. You only need to disassemble the 2 piece rod and look into the rod blank. If you saw a solid piece of dark gray carbon like material in the center of the rod, you found yourself a graphite rod. You could find out if the rod is closer to a medium-light or closer to a medium-heavy by wiggling it.
Daiwa D-Shocks will come with either 1 ball bearing reels or 3 ball bearings reels. Most combos that came with a 3 ball bearing reel will also come with the stiffer graphite rod. Unfortunately, I couldn't guarantee that. You really need to wiggle those rods in your hand to find out which rod it came with.
These combos are VERY CHEAP now because the manufacturer knew they messed up big time on their recent batch(es). Take advantage of this situation. These combos are very good buys.
PS: I think you should look for that graphite, medium-heavy rod. You could find 1 ball bearing, medium-heavy graphite rod combos between $16 to $18! 3 ball bearing reel combo will cost about $2-$3 dollars more.

Sorry; I went to see it with high expectations. I thought the storyline was ridiculous, the acting was, with the exception of Eddie Murphy, horrifying and the song lyrics were abysmal. Question: What makes ships float and not sink?
I know the body of a ship is made from iron or steel or whatever heavy metal.. and if you throw, for example, a rod of steel in the water it will sink immdiately.. so what's that thing that makes such big ships float as if they are made from wood?
Answer: The Ship's hull is a container of material (air mostly) that is lighter than an equal volume of water.
When an Iron ship that weighs 100,000 tons floats in the water, the weight of the water it displaces is exactly the same. But the volume of 100,000 tons of water is much less than the volume of the ship's hull in the water. In other words the ship is taking up more space in the water than the same tonnage of water takes. The ship (including the space inside) is less dense than the water it displaces, so it floats. If you fill up the space inside the ship with water, the ship will sink because the stuff the ship is made of (iron) is denser than water, and once the inside of the ship has enough water in it, then the ship full of water is more dense than the water it displaces and it sinks.The wooden ships of old sank. Why did they sink if they were made of wood? Because the bottoms of the ships were full of heavy stones called ballast stones. These heavy stones prevented the ship from tipping over when under sail in a strong wind. But the stones made the ship 'heavier than water'. They floated for the same reason an iron ship floats. The empty space inside the ship made the entire ship less dense than the water it displaced. If an old wooden ship filled with water, the wooden parts would want to keep floating, but the ballast stones were heavy and dense enough to overcome the bouancy of the wooden hull and down they went.

If it is surrounded by magnets of the same polarity, we are talking perfect calculations, will the stationary magnet spin to "stay away from the surrounding magnets" or will it just find an area of least resistance and stop....
Answer: Same polority repels.
WHen one is repelling the other one repels in the opposite edirection so it will stop in between.

I use a Babolat Drive Z lite and I broke a string. I am looking for a sting that gives me a lot of power and spin...i am not so considered about the durability or price...natural gut maybe? also what tension i like to restring 1 time a year...any suggestians
Answer: You would be best off doing a hybrid. This involves a polyester string in the mains and a synthetic string in the cross. String at 60 and you can't go wrong. As far as natural gut goes, while it is nice, it is useless when it gets wet as it dies and frays, far too expensive, and if you are only restringing once a year natural gut will die quickly. Question: My cd drive?
ok the problem with my cd drive is that it wont read cds well actually somtimes it does and sometimes it doesnt is want i want to know is how do i fix this could the cord be loose or could it need a driver or is it broke and needs to be replaced also sometimes when it works and i open the drive it comes out spinning sometimes its a windows xp home edition desktop and the cd drive is a lite-on cd rw/dvd player

Answer: Is the intermittent failure with the same CD or different CDs? If it's different CDs you might want to see what they have in common (i.e. homemade CDs or even brand of CDRs). If commercially produced audio CDs can play just fine it's probably something else other than your drive.
Your drive's optical reader could also be dirty.
It's doubtful it's a driver and if it were, WinXP would have probably downloaded the latest driver for you on your last update or go to the manufacturer's website to check for updates.
It's doubltful it's a cable.

Question: My goldfish's fin ripped!!!!?
I moved my goldfish to my dorm today, and I just noticed that part of his back fin is ripped. the little slice is hanging from the back. He is swimming and eating normal, but I am worried. Please read this explanation:There is a man made pond that was once a nice little fishing spot for baby bass and catfish. Now too many people have seen us fish it and it has become pretty crowded with people who don't respect catch and release. The pond has been holding fish for about two or three years now and the bass have not grown one bit. They are all small enough to grip completely with one hand around the width of them. What factors do you think are making these bass not grow at all? Do you think that there are still a few big ones in there? If so, how would I go about locating those ones since they must be spooked. The place is too small for a large boat really but paddle boats can fit comfortably so depth finders are out of the picture. I don't think there is really alot of structure and cover in the pond either. If there is any good sized ones where would they be holding in a place like this. And if there isnt any, then why? Is there a way I can change this?
Answer: Fish grow to match their environment. You have a man made pond - not much you can do except increase the depth and width of the pond! Feed them more maybe, but not likely.

Striped bass fishing is best in mid summer during warm weather, especially in the northeast, since this is the only time of year when the lakes get warm enough for the general population to sit up and take notice. Striper are out in large numbers, and you can find some real bubbas to take home as well, with lots of trophy sized fish coming out of the woodwork. The problem is, everyone else is trying to do the same thing at the same time. So, if striped bass fishing for big fish is only good when the water is a nice 70+ degrees on the surface, and that means boating in a crowd, what can you do to make sure that you are not offensive to other people? What does it mean to observe fishing etiquette?
First of all, realize that striped bass fishing is all about being territorial, which means that regular anglers out on the lake are going to arrive earlier than the general crowd. Therefore, they will already be holed up in their little area of the lake that they consider a hot spot and have a lot of faith in for catching big bass. As you seek out your own little nook in the lake, fishing etiquette requires that you do everything possible not to disrupt these fishermen who are already parked.
Making sure you don't disturb them involves several aspects, including passing by without taking up anchor in their area, not passing too closely so that your boat doesn't spook the bass in their hot spot, and pass at a moderate speed to disturb the waters as little as possible. If you decide to anchor too closely to someone who has already taken possession of a cove or inlet, you are seen as competition, which is not very welcome, especially during this most productive season. Passing too closely can spook the bass in the area where the fisherman has already weighed down, since bass have sharp hearing, a notable sense of touch to detect movement, and are easily spooked.

I'm remodeling my house...my bathroom in hunting / fishing /camping design. I thought about hanging some pictures from little artificial spinner baits, displaying a red coleman thermos on a shelf. Answer: If you have shelves you can put tackle boxes up for storage of little knick knacks, use those spinner bait thingys for your shower curtain rings, and maybe small canteens for soaps and bubbles baths?

How to Make Homemade Catfish and Carp Floating and Buoyant Hook Baits
An introduction into making especially effective buoyant hook baits for catfish and carp:
As you are rolling all your paste into balls before boiling as you would to make boiled carp or catfish baits, put aside, maybe 50 paste dough pieces, for use as ‘buoyant’ hook baits; these are excellent great for specially attractive purposes!
They can be great fished on their own over weed or silt, or as a ‘snowman’ when used on the hair or hook with a normal sinking boilie, or used on a variety of hook rigs from the water surface, at mid – water, or on and just off the bottom etc; in fact everywhere you might find a feeding carp or hunting catfish!
You can incorporate a piece of cork, or small balls of polystyrene into these dough pieces or even use a high amount of cork granules in a dedicated base mix, to adjust the amount of buoyancy of hook baits you want. These are available from the commercial companies too. The advantage with these is that your hook baits are identical in nutritional makeup and signal leak - off to your ‘free’ or ground baits.
Another method is to put a small number of smaller, normal baits on a plate, and microwave them in time increments of, e.g. 20 seconds, removing them before they begin to burn. These are soaked in attractors before use, to maximize attraction.
Another method is to adjust the level of ingredients until you arrive at a floating test bait. I’ve also had this happen by accident, and not design while experimenting with more buoyant ingredients like sodium caseinate, shrimp and krill meals, even some egg biscuit based bird foods, for example.
I use casein as the base with sodium caseinate and then other ingredients, as this offers great nutritional signals, while being a harder more resilient bait. You can buy ‘pop-up’ base mixes too from Nutrabaits, Rod Hutchinson, Solar Baits, etc. Again, these baits are left to soak in an extract / flavor / amino acid compound, for example, to harden, preserve, and maximize carp attraction.
Such baits fished just on their own on hard fished waters can be very productive, especially casting immediately to ‘rolling, and ‘head and shouldering’ carp!
Making great ‘floater cake’ bait:
The easiest method of mass producing personalized, random shaped nutritional floating bait is:
Make your base mix as normal but with much more buoyant ingredient, like 6 ounces per pound of sodium caseinate. Adding shrimp meal or krill meal will have the same effect and these are great proven nutritional attractors in themselves.
Add 2 extra eggs per pound dry mix (with bicarbonate of soda to put more air bubbles into it to help it float if necessary), leaving the mix more liquid than solid. Whisk the mix, and pour into a baking tray, and cook in the oven until risen and just brown on top.
A good trick is to use a high level of ground-up dog or cat food biscuits in your floater cake ; like ‘Pedigree Chum’. These baits work great on waters where carp regularly eat these biscuits as free baits, and have previously been caught. Such big fish are usually much more difficult to hook, on the biscuits themselves as bait, even though all ‘free’ biscuits are eaten, hook baits may be rejected. Very frustrating for the angler!
