Question: What is the Wavelength?
A crest of a water wave requires 5.2s to travel between 2 points on a fishing pier located 19m apart. It is noted that in a series of wavs that 20 crests pass the first point in 17s. What is the wavelength of the waves?
Answer: The speed of the waves is 19 meters per 5.2 seconds, or 3.65 m/s. If 20 crests pass in 17 seconds, it must take 17/20 seconds for a single wavelength to pass. 3.65 m/s times 17/20 seconds = 3.1 meters. If you keep your units with your numbers, the answer kind of falls out.

Question: A short poem in my " How are you travelling?" series?
Comments please.
SHARK INFESTED WATERSI’m in shark infested waters,
There’s little I can do
As I clutch my trusty paddle
To hit just one or two.
They eye me for their dinner
I am really in a bother.
Maybe if I knife one,
They’ll start to eat each other.
Hooray! They’ve gone and left me
To chase a school of fish.
At last a ship comes into sight,
It was my dearest wish.
Good to see you back Octogen. I missed you. This poem is to encourage folk that there is always hope no matter how impossible it may seem.Answer: Catchy punchy relevant, you must be from Oz or SA??
Would not be out of place in a book of poems for young teens. Well done

Question: Hot Water System Question relating to electricity?
When you used the hot water for approximately 10 minutes should a lot of electricity be used in heating the hot water system again.
We have an older meter with the discs and after using the hot water it spins very fast whilest when using other appliances like the tv and computer it spins very slowly. We have a fish tank pump and a fridge continously going 24 hours and it still doesn't spin that fast. Only when the hot water system has been used.
Does that usually happen or does it mean that the hot water system is packing it in?
Our electricity bill was much higher and I was just wondering if this could be caused by the hot water system?
Answer: The answer is yes, wherever you live. I have a fair idea you are in Australia or New Zealand. If so, your hot water system runs at 240 volts like all the other electrical equipment in the house. The meter reads the current consumed by the house as a whole and records it as kilowatt-hours.
It is all simple arithmetic, a 100 watt light bulb would take 10 hours to use one kilowatt hour, a 25 watt bulb would take 40 hours. Four 25 watt bulbs would take 10 hours, you get the picture.
The electric hot water system is by far the biggest user of power in the house when it is heating water. Probably 50% more than all the lights in the house and the TV and computer added together. The next biggest user is a refrigerator or electric stove if you have one. The fish tank pump probably uses 50 or maybe 100 watts depending on its size. It should have its power rating printed on it.
The hot water system is almost certainly a storage type, the instantaneous type are all but unused in Australia. This means it heats a tank full of water to whatever temperature is set by a thermostat. When the water gets a little hotter than this, the thermostat automatically shuts the electricity to the heater off. While it is on it may be consuming 2,400 Watts.
Because the tank is fairly well insulated, the water stays hot enough for a good while, but eventually it will cool to the point where the thermostat switches the power on again. If you improve the insulation it will take longer to cool off. Of course, if you use the hot water, cold water runs into the tank and the thermostat switches on.
The hot water is taken from the top, the cold runs in at the bottom, which is why you do not feel the water getting colder while you are in the shower for a short while, but if you stay there long enough I guarantee you will get cold. The longer you stay in the shower, the more hot water you use and the more electricity is needed to heat the next lot of water up and the more of a bill you pay.
Some of the answers above are unlikely to be correct. There is almost certainly nothing wrong with your hot water system.
Now if you own the house ask for your electricity supplier to supply a "ripple control" for your hot water system. This is an electronic device that is a switch controlled by a "ripple" signal sent down the power lines. The electricity suppliers can then switch hot water systems off for brief periods every day when the load on the electricity supply is highest. They will then give you a discount of the electricity used by the hot water system. It will also need a separate meter. This may also be available for rental properties.

Question: Do I need a rod license to fish from the beach in the UK?
I am new to fishing and as I live near the coast I'd like to try my hand at fishing from the beach- once I've got the right kit, of course.
As far as I can tell, there are two licenses- coarse and game. Am I to presume that neither of these covers coastal fishing (strictly from the shore) or would this fall under 'game' fishing?
Also- can I just wander on to any public beach and start to fish, or are there specific areas and times that are open to fishing?
Please excuse me if I have made a silly mistake or question is a stupid one- as I say I am brand new to fishing and I am still getting to grips with all the terminology!
Any pointers as to what to look for for my first beach-fishing kit also greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Answer: no you dont need a license or permit to fish in the sea ,but if you are using a beach casting rod be careful when casting because the weight of the rod can pull you in. have a good time fishing.

Question: I would like to know what a fly rod called scientific angler bought in the 1960's would be worth? It's 8' 1" .
I found this fishing rod in my husbands closet after he died. It is in cloth cover and in metal tubing. It is a system 6 with a line weight of #6. It is in almost perfect condition. We had three daughter's who have no interest in fish, so I thought I would sell it, but don't know where to start.
Answer: Scientific anglers are more famous for their fly lines being of excellent quality, they haven't made many rods except a few, they are a good make and you should get about $50-110 for it, possibly more if its a limited edition or if its in good condition and a collector wants it. Its a shame no body wants to use it but these things happen. Try eBay i would put a reserve on it of a minimum of $80 if its in good condition.

Question: Float fishing of sea-walls / harbours?
I want to start float fishing with my little boy off my local harbour. Ive bought a kit with rod, reel and float rig and have been boning up on the net before i go anywhere near the harbour. i have a few questions;
1 Do I need permission from the harbour master to float fish?
2 Is there general size hook to cover all fish sizes one can expect off a harbour?
3 I have a alloy hook disgorger - are they as easy to use as the forums suggest and HOW do you use them? I intend to practise before i use them for real.
4 What depths are different fish varieties found.
Thanks for your help.Answer: 1 Do I need permission from the harbour master to float fish?
Usually, I only look around for "no fishing" signs. If I couldn't find any, I will go ahead and fish until someone tells me not to. Since you spelled "harbor" with an extra U, I don't think you're from the US. However, I don't think things are that different in most English speaking countries.2 Is there general size hook to cover all fish sizes one can expect off a harbour?
I use hook size between size 8 all the way up to 4/0. You pick a bait that's suitable for your location and pick a hook size accordingly. If I don't know where to start, I would use a size 2 or a size 4 hook (US sizes) and work my way up or down.3 I have a alloy hook disgorger...
There are many different styles of disgorger available. I use something very similar to this but without the T handle: http://www.ssacn.org/wp-content/themes/cutline-3-column-split-11/images/SpurdogBestpractice_C929/clip_image0061714319ef8654ebab2a80f63ae3b9c69.jpg It is the easiest disgorger I've used to date. The bend of the hook will fit in that little notch at the end. A little push and pull motion will get your hook out. A long nose plier is still recommended. A plier could give you a little extra hook removing power. You still need a plier to hold the fish's mouth open if that fish got many sharp teeth.4 What depths are different fish varieties found.
Fish could be found through out the water column. If it's nigh fishing, I will fish very close to surface first. I will fish a little deeper during the day. If the scent of my bait can't draw fish up to feed, I will chum the water a little. If that didn't help, I will send the bait down very close to the bottom (about 1-2 feet) and work my way up until I found something (or give up).

Question: How clean does the pond water need to be for Goldfish?
7 fish in 12 x 4 ft pond. Has pump for waterfall. Green algea or moss forms on surface, I also use the bacteria stuff. Fish seem to be thriving. But I don't want any surprises. They are 4 times what they were when put in pond. I watch them eat. So I know that usually they eat all thier food.
Answer: A bit of algae is normal in a pond, and generally not harmfull to the fish.
The toxic chemical that build up are not visible, so the algae is not really an indication of the water quality. You can have perfectly clear water with no algae, thats totally toxic. Conversely you can have a pond thats pretty green and murky, but still safe for the fish.
Two things you can test for with simple test kits.
Ammonia. If ammonia is building up in the water then your pond doesn't have enough filtering.
Nitrate. Nitrate is the end result of your filter working properly. If your nitrate level gets high then you need to change some of the water.
Both ammonia and nitrate do act as a fertiliser for plants and algae, so if you have high levels of either you may get a bloom of algae. But the algae is only a symptom of some other problem, and is actually helping your fish by absorbing the pollutants. Simply trying to fix the algae growth is just hiding the real problem.

Question: CO2 in planted tank?
How do I put CO2 in a fish tank? Is too much CO2 bad for fish. I have christmas moss, java moss, and moss balls. My java moss is dark green and I want it to be bright green. Will normal gravel work or do I have to change that vto get bright green plants. My java moss also doesn't grow very fast, but I heard it is suppose to.
I also have phoenix moss which looks kinda dead, dark green, not growing. It is on plastic mesh. The christmas moss is on a wire mesh to one side of the tank. How do I provide good circulation?Answer: About 30 ppm (parts per million) of CO2 is dangerous to fish hypercapnic (too much CO2 in the blood). Really, for mosses, there isn't a need to inject CO2, but if you wish to, I would read this article, especially the part about DIY CO2: http://www.fishlesscycling.com/articles/co2_discussion.html Java Moss is dark green, and there's very little you can do to make it light green. Too much light has a tendency to wash out the moss, almost bleaching it. Java Moss doesn't use the substrate, so don't worry about the gravel. Java Moss and most other Mosses are VERY slow growers in most all cases, so that isn't a cause for concern. If you're desperate to get some carbon for the plants, consider Flourish Excel.
Really, I would guess your biggest issue is too little light or improper spectrum, as the Phoenix Moss should at least be showing signs of growth. Good circulation is best provided with good filtration.
EDIT: Clearly, the above answer is very uninformed regarding aquatic mosses, as they are VERY well known to not have roots and rely entirely upon the water column for nutrients, NOT the substrate-- putting in a planted substrate would be of no use to your plants.

Question: The brand of Jarred meat/fish pastes with best ingredients?
Before I start, this may only make sense to people in the UK. Meat paste is a pate in a jar, i don't want to eat wallpaper paste!
I know that the meat & fish pastes in a jar (Shippams being a popular one) are really all the crap compressed, but does anyone know the best brand? I can't eat pate' at the moment so it's the next best thing. I wondered if anyone knew of any 'premium' lines or brands?Answer: Yeah, I am not in the UK, so this is what I found:

Fly Fishing - an Introduction
Introduction To Fly Fishing
Over the last 2000 years humans have employed numerous methods of archery, fishing and hunting in order to find food. Over that time, fly fishing has become seen by many anglers as the essential method of fishing requiring skill, patience and stealth. Indeed trout fishing is by far the most rewarding fishing whether boat fishing or bank fishing.
When compared to other forms of fishing and the fishing equipment required at the bank, fly fishing stands out above the rest due to the limited fishing equipment that is needed; allowing greater stretches of a river or lake to be explored in a session. By employing what is essentially a fishing lure presented in such a way as to convince the fish it is a living creature worth devouring encompasses all that relates to the history of archery, fishing and hunting.
Which Rod?
There are several things that you need to think about when choosing the right type
of fly fishing. Every reel and fly fishing rod has a certain function and knowing the function is critical to its success.
One of the first things that you need to consider is comfort. Is the rod that you're
using comfortable for you to hold? If you're shorter than about 5'5" you won't
want to use a rod that is seven feet. Choose a fly fishing rod length that is easy for you to hold and cast for a few hours at a time.
Most of the fly fishing rods on the market today are designed to allow you to feel when a fish takes the bait. The shaft of the fly fishing rod is called a "blank" and when the rod is first manufactured the blank is made from fiberglass, graphite, or other materials. Each
of these blanks has an action that is either: light, medium, medium/heavy, or
heavy. The upper portion will also have an action that is either: extra light, light,
or regular. Both ends of the blank are assembled and the final result is a fishing rod, complete with a handle and guide. No matter what type of rod that you're using, the "action" of the rod will refer to the "blank". The action of the rod will have a great
deal to do with the type of fishing that you're doing.
Now go to your local tackle shop and ask to try out a range of rods in order to decide which best suits yourself. This will be an individual thing and the only way is to try the rods bearing in mind .
Which Reel?
Reels – There are three main types of reels that you can choose from when it
comes to fly fishing: (1) baitcasting reels, (2) spinning reels, and (3) spincast reels. The reel that you choose will depend your own personal preferences.
Baitcasting reels: Baitcasting reels have better accuracy and control of the lure
than other reels. They are better equipped to handle lines that are ten or more
pounds in weight. The one thing to be aware of when using a baitcasting reel is
that they often have the tendency to snarl or fight back when the spool starts to
spin faster than the line that is being played out. This is particularly true if you are
casting into the wind.
To prevent these backlashes, baitcasting reels have a magnetic braking feature but
you'll want to count more on the control of the spool tension, which is a knob that
is usually located right beside the handles. You'll need to set the spool tension
knob for each lure by holding the rod straight and disengaging the spool. Loosen
the tension just until the lure begins to drop down and then tighten the spool just a
bit.
When you're casting the reel you'll disengage the spool and then hold it tight with
your thumb. When you want the lure to move forward you'll simply loosen up on
the pressure. After some practice you'll learn to control the speed of the spool so
that you have better accuracy.
Spinning reels: Spinning reels are reels that have a spool that is stationary. The
line is spun onto the spool as a device called a "bail" rotates around it. Spinning
reels can be used for any size of line but more experienced fly fishers will use it
for lightweight lures with a weight less than ten pounds. Spinning reels tend to
perform a little better than baitcasting reels when you're casting into the wind.
One disadvantage of using a spinning reel is that there is the inevitable twisting of
the line which will create tangles and knots. When your line becomes twisted the
best thing that you can do is replace the line with a new one. One way that you can prevent some of these tangles from occurring is by putting the spool into a glass of
water for about 24 hours before you head out to go fishing, giving it a chance to
soak.
To cast the spinning reel, hold the handle of the rod with one hand, making sure
that the spinning reel is on the bottom side with your middle finger placed in front
of the "foot" of the reel. Slowly open up the bail and pull the line behind the first
knuckle of your index finger. Release the line by pulling your index finger into a
straight position. You can control how far you cast the line by letting the line
move along your index finger as close to the spool as possible as the line unwinds.
When you want to stop the line you simply push your finger against the lip of the
spool.
Spincast reels: Spincast reels are also known as "push button" reels. They are
closed-face and are very easy to use. They are almost impossible to tangle and can
be cast in smooth, long arcs without twisting. The main portion of the spool is
encased in a covering and it remains in one place while a pick-up pin spins around
the spool. When buying a spincast reel make sure that you don't buy the most
inexpensive one since you want to pay for good quality. Many beginner fly fishers
do well with a spincast reel.
To cast the spincast reel all you need to do is depress the push button and hold it
down. You'll release the button when you want your lure to move in a forward
position. Most spincast reels are able to be used with any weight lure or line size.
Which Line?
Most of the lines that you'll use for fly fishing will be made of nylon
monofilament. However, other lines are becoming just as popular such as lines
that are (1) braided, (2) co-filament, or (3) fused. No matter what type of line you
buy make sure that it's a "premium" line. Premium lines are more durable and
even than cheaper lines. You'll want to match the fishing line that you buy to the
following criteria and conditions:
· Strength: Strength is measured in the pounds of force that is needed to
break the line. You'll find that most lines will break at higher weights than
they are sold at.
· Resistance to Abrasion: When you're fishing in areas where there are a lot
of brush or rocks you'll want to use a line that won't break easily when it is
constantly rubbed.
· Line Diameter: The diameter of the line will affect the way the line is cast
as well as how deep your lure will run. Diameter also has an affect on the
visibility and stretching of the line. The thinner a line is the harder it will be
for the bass to see it. Thinner lines will also give some bait, such as grubs, a
more realistic flowing action. The one good thing about lines with a thicker
diameter is that they are better able to withstand abrasion.
· Stretch Lines: Stretch lines won't break as easily when they are being
pulled by a fish. They are beneficial in letting you detect strikes as well as
help you in setting hooks.
· Line Stiffness: The stiffness of the line is related to its stretch. The stiffer
the line is the harder it will be to cast. The advantage to having a stiff line is
that is more sensitive than flexible lines.
· Line visibility: In clear water it's important that your line is as invisible to
the fish as possible. However, you'll want to have a line that is highly visible when your fishing lures are on a subtle strike, such as worms, grubs,
and jigs. This is so that you can easily detect any movement on the line that
may indicate a fish is biting.
Holding your Rod Effectively
It’s important that you learn to hold your rod effectively under any fishing
conditions. You want to make sure that you maintain good control at all times
without gripping too hard. You can adjust the power of your hold when you’re in
the middle of a cast. This will allow you to minimize the vibrations of each
movement. With just a bit of practice you’ll be able to increase the tightness at the
same as you learn to relax your grip.
Which Bait?
Following is a list of some best bait choices as recommended by the experts:
? Grubs: Grubs are small lures that are usually used to catch larger fish.
Grubs are great for use in highland reservoirs where there is little cover for
the fish. The grub is much like a bare jig head that has a soft plastic body to
attach to the hook. You’ll want to use them most often in clear water
conditions.
