Question: carolina skiff jv 17 or boston whaler montauk 15?

hello i am a 15 year old and my dad recently bought both of these boats. i am very experienced with boats and outboards alike. he said i could pick one of the 2 boats for myself here the the pros and cons of each boat

Carolina skiff-
pros- bigger, has bimini.
cons- more gas, slow, more maintence, needs engine work.

Boston whaler-
pros- has stereo, depth/fishfinder, accessories, bigger engine, less maintence.
Cons- smaller, no bimini.

im going to be using the boat mainly for fishing and going to the nearby island

which one is better/which one should i keep

Answer: The whaler looks like it would be YOUR best choice.

The Carolina Skiff maybe a more stable fishing platform, but if the engine is questionable that would not be good to have it break down and not be able to motor home.

Question: Favorite tactics for catching early summer patern bass in highland reservoirs?

Very little visible cover, what is visible are submerged mesquite, miles of deep rocky shorelines, few humps, maximum depth 90', water temp in low 70's. Fishfinder is busted! What to do?

Answer: An understanding of the differences in bass waters and how bass relate to them during hot weather months will get you started in the right direction.

The key, of course, is to find the depth at which most of the fish live after they leave spawning areas. On many lakes, fish take up residence in the deepest water that offers the most food, cover and comfort. Some experts believe that as many as 80 percent of the bass population moves deep during the dog days.

But that doesn't mean the best fishing is always deep. In fact, it's a common misconception that high water temperatures drive all fish deep. During the 1999 Bassmaster Classic on the Louisiana Delta, for example, pros were catching bass from less than a foot of water despite blistering water temperatures in the 90s.

And on some Northern natural lakes, bass are frequently taken by anglers flipping baits into shallow grassbeds when water temps are in the 80s. So, you don't have to fish deep to catch fish, even though a large percentage of fish may be found deeper.

BASS icon Rick Clunn says the first step is to make a mental decision to do whatever you are most efficient at as a fisherman.

Forage is another factor. When baitfish move off the banks as the water warms, bass will follow and cling to nearby structure like points, rocky humps, deep flooded timber, channel bends and ledges.

Another consideration is wind. Wind-blown grass flats on clear Northern lakes can be hotbeds for bass activity during the middle of a summer day. But don't rule out the deep bite on any lake during the summer.

After the spawn, bass will follow points, creek channels and ditches away from spawning flats to deeper sections on the main lake.

Again, depth is a relative issue. The downstream or dam end of an impoundment is often deeper than the upper end, so bass may find comfort in greater depths there than they do uplake. Theoretically, an angler could be catching good numbers of bass on the ends of points near the dam in 30 feet of water while anglers fishing points up the lake may be fishing similar structure in only 5 to 15 feet of water.

"The major creek channels on the north ends of lakes don't get as much pressure," offers Rogers. "Those fish up there are resident fish and don't know deeper water exists, so they stay more accessible to the shallow water fisherman."

This is where Rogers positions his boat on the channel and casts Texas rigged plastics to the tops of the ledges that may only be in 3 or 4 feet of water.

"I'll hop it back into the river bed, keying on bends of the creek or stumpy ledges along the creek edge," he says.

Points anywhere on a lake offer clues to finding summer bass. Fish use them routinely for moving between deep and shallow water.

"Those can be the obvious points you see running offshore, but the sweet spots are truly the underwater points unseen above water," explains Hill.

On Highland Reservoirs, such as Table Rock in Missouri, bass will suspend in very deep timber growing on the ends of points. That's where Elite pro Brian Snowden says Shaky worms and drop shotting account for a lot of bass.

"The trees may be growing on a bottom 45 to 60 feet deep and top out at about 20 or 30 feet," he describes. "Oftentimes, that's where the thermocline is located. Bass will be holding around that depth."

If so, he will fish vertically, shaking his baits in the faces of the bass hovering in tree limbs. "If you can find gravel points at that depth — providing it's above the thermocline — a Carolina rig will catch them, too," he adds.

• Deep crankbaits, such as Bomber's Fat Free Shad and Norman's DD22, are preferred by many BASS pros for probing water 15 to 20 feet deep, a proven summer and early fall tactic. Bang the lure off hard cover and the bottom to provoke a Reaction Strike.

• Carolina rigged soft plastic lures will work at virtually any depth; the "ball and chain" (as BASS pros call this rig) is especially effective in 15 to 30 feet of water. Use a 1-ounce sinker and a 2- to 3-foot leader. Cast the rig to deep structure and slowly drag the sinker across the bottom; deep bass will grab a worm, lizard, creature or tube bait darting behind it.

• Drop shotting works best in deep, clear water. A small straight-tail worm or soft jerkbait is rigged above a bottom-bumping sinker and dragged or hopped across deep structures to catch bass suspending off the bottom.

• Texas rigged plastic worms and lizards are effective on deep ledges and channel drops down to around 25 feet. Cast the lure to the top of the ledge and hop or crawl it over the dropoff.

• Jigs and grubs will catch bass holding deep on 45-degree banks and stair-stepping ledges. Cast, hop or pull the lure off the drop, then let it fall to the next depth level on a tight line.

• Spoons can be jigged directly under the boat; they'll catch bass 50 feet or deeper. Note the depth of baitfish or bass on your graph, pay out line until the spoon is at or just above this level, and then jig repeatedly.

• Blade baits and tailspinners sink quickly and are capable of probing extremely deep water (35 to 60 feet) faster than any other artificials. They're especially popular with fishermen targeting winter smallmouth and spotted bass. Cast them to sloping banks, tight-lining them to the bottom and retrieving with rips and pauses.

• Heavy spinnerbaits (3/4 to 1 1/2 ounces) are deadly when bass are suspended in the 15- to 25-foot zone above deep brushpiles. Cast the spinnerbait beyond the cover, count the lure down to the desired depth, and then slow roll it back to the boat.
